KATON -
The Rage Called Rock 'n' Roll One festive, infectious boogie after another characterizes Michael Katon's Rage Called Rock 'n' Roll. With a production lean that hearkens back to Zep's "Travellin' Riverside Blues" sparse, yet damp qualities, the sound is spot on. "She's All Mine" is a decent is unexceptional opener, yet the title track quickly smacks us upside the head, forcing a delirious smile...simply cruising along with the top down, racing to beat the sunset over the mountainside, all the while wondering what happened to the magic of that music we love so much. "No More Baby" could have been a Stones piece, and maybe was, except he grabbed it first! Nice, fluid riff with enough bite to tease that girl of yours into a frenzy on the kitchen table, even if it is a "Get outta my face..." song. "Jesus Wears Adidas" is more than a novelty piece, but a compelling storyteller. It also has a deep voiced chorus that is tough to shake. Even the weaker tracks are worth a few listens because they are expelled by an artist we trust is knowing what he's doing. Katon's a student and a practitioner all the same. He knows the balance of roots rock and boogie rock, keeping it as classy and as real as it demands. In the end, this is simply a 1971 blues hard rock blast. -Brian Coles
